TOASTBAR PRESENTS: THE KAYA REVOLUTION!

WARNING: kaya photo overload below…

so it started off like this..
diana: there’s a new kaya place opening in the city, my friend’s cousin is making the kaya!
me: WHAT!? MORE KAYA?! WHERE!?

Toastbar on Urbanspoon

…so of course, being the kaya-addict i am, diana and i made a trek to Toastbar today, a chilled out ‘cafe’ of sorts in the basement of Arrow on Swanston – only officially open since monday this week, we were greeted by excitement and “hey you look familiar…” [burn city is small...even smaller if you're asian] by the girls and boys there.

di and i chatted over our kaya to the owner Elisa, who explained that this cafe was of sorts, her ‘internship’ with Life Expedition Church, cafe entrepreneurship being a dream of hers – and the vision of this one, to essentially create an open community for ALL people to join and feel a part of, especially for international students who may come to study here with no connections.

as she wrote on Toastbar’s facebook page:

“To open up a space in Melbourne City for communities and friends to relax, have heart-to-heart talks while munching on Kaya Toasts alongside aromatic drinks and Soft Boiled eggs. We believe in building genuine relationships.”

adding that the majority of the additional activities occurring in Toastbar were student-envisaged and organised [i.e Open Mic night, Nasi Lemak night], Elisa hopes that the running and organisation of Toastbar will become a community run project, something able to be passed along to others in time to come, and in the process, build connections, friendships and whatever else comes along:D

Toastbar is located in the Basement Cafe, Arrow on Swanston, 488 Swanston St, Carlton VIC 3053

opening hours [although currently are subject to change...to be open longer hours possibly!] are:
Mon-Tues 10-12pm, 6-11pm
Thurs-Fri 10-12pm, 6-11pm
Sat[? edit: nope]-Sun 8-10am

additional events include:

  • Boardgames night is every Tuesday from 6.30pm onwards
  • Nasi Lemak night every Thurs/Fri from 6-9pm, and Sat/Sun from 10am-2pm
  • Open Mic night starts 30th March! every following Friday from 8-10pm

i actually dunno what this is…just walked past…assuming its introducing kaya + kopi hehe:D

now onto the kaya [which is important ROFL]…IT WAS AWESOME. diana and i tried the Hainanese, Peanut Butter and Banana [premium flavour] kaya, and all were freakin GOOD. my favourite hands down was the peanut butter one! and i would like to go back to try the traditional kaya…

..they also have nutella + cheese flavours, as far as i remember.

…also opted for the slightly sweeter asian bread over regular bread…which makes it all the more sinful [+ butter..which i forgot/didnt know about until i had already eaten it! i normally request no butter...oops]

heres a bit of trivia i didnt know – traditional kaya is with pandan [the green version], hainanese style kaya is without pandan [so its the brown version]..

definitely would come back here!! its a really chill atmosphere for you to come with ur study notes, laptops, friends blah blah to relax and nomz on kaya toast:D

afterwards we met with doreen, who took us to the rooftop of arrow to discuss dance ministry stuff with diana [possible future performance at Toastbar? PERHAPS :D]…it was SO pretty!! blue skies, green grass [ok so its turf...but it still added to the ambience]… doreen added that Toastbar’s vision was to welcome all types of art to showcase – be it dance, singing, drawing, whatever! which is awesome…so dont forget to contact Toastbar if you want to add to this;)
