PHOTO DIARY: NEW YORK DAY 1 + 2

bit of a chaotic entrance to the big apple – leaving chicago in a taxi with the youngest cab driver EVER [dude looked like…a babyface eurasian or something haha. mid 20s MAX] at 4am; mr poops told me the wrong airport to go to [i left chicago one day before him], and in my half awake state i didnt realise until we were nearly at o’hare…before i got a call from his brother going “he wants me to tell you its MIDWAY!”

…uh ohs. cab fee of $85 bucks later [!!] and a frantic rush not to miss my flight, i was on my way to new york – completed with airport security broken luggage. ugh.

met my brother in west manhattan, in chelsea [note: even now that the trip is over, i have no idea when is appropriate to tip/not tip…so i kept forgetting to tip taxi drivers=/ they must hate me.]

IMG_6463

again on the american coffee thing – this was supposed to be a cappuchino?! didnt taste like one. nice presentation though.

IMG_6467

pancakes for brunch…zomg and wayy too much food. they gave us juice and fruit as well as out main dish 0_O

after food decided to go check out the Highline, which was nearby – RIDICULOUSLY hot first day in NY, ughhh it got so much worse under direct sun on the highline….amazing views though!

IMG_6474

random graffiti wall on the way…

ELMO. there were heaps of elmos.

IMG_6540

chilled at starbucks [because it was so disgustingly hot outside] for a few hrs before walking to Bryant Park for a bit:)

IMG_6550

IMG_6551

nice! heaps of ppl lounging…

IMG_6557

..and had my first GIANT pretzel in 15 yrs [one of the things i remember from NY when i was a kid] – once is enough though, it was a bit dry and the salt was wayy too much.

went back to times square for a bit to meet friends fel + pete, before going off to harlem for some soulfood;)

IMG_6583

mushroom + shallot omelette.

IMG_6584

chatting.

IMG_6588

think its an art school in NY? my bro’s friend told me abt it…

walked down to SoHo for a bit before going to the 9/11 memorial.

IMG_6589

IMG_6595

freedom tower!

IMG_6597

inside the memorial center.

IMG_6598

redevelopment plans for the memorial area.

everywhere in NY that is of some importance now requires a full airport security check…so before we could go see the memorial pools we had to line up into a room with again, full scanners and police on duty. was crazy!

IMG_6605

freedom tower again…

IMG_6608

first pool..

IMG_6610

it was really pretty amazing, the photo doesnt do it justice…water runs off the top down the sides into the middle…crazy!

IMG_6637

apparently this is one of the original trees left over from the 9/11 attack? i think? not sure…

next stop was Wall Street and the stock exchange – via a giant bull statue, which attracted a lot of crowds..

IMG_6641

IMG_6644

big bull.

IMG_6655

stock exchange~!

IMG_6657

IMG_6658

IMG_6661

trump towers.

made a small impromptu stop to Century 21, which id heard a lot about – designer discount outlet…in my opinion, totally overrated. the stock was pretty average, and majority of the clothing was high end designer gear, meaning even with a discount it was still ridiculously expensive. so…didnt buy anything. meh.

IMG_6663

one thing i noticed in NY subways is the frequency of buskers – and good buskers at that! majority of the ones performing on the trains or in the stations were often very good, it was pretty refreshing:)

IMG_6665

guy on a guitar and the blonde girl singing…wasnt bad. he was better though;)

dinner was at Gyu Kaku, some jap bbq place – again not bad, met up with gary + friend uj, as well as meeting another rebecca lee [such a common name haha].

IMG_6672

hi gary.

IMG_6673

edamame.

IMG_6674

some kind of fried rice thing…interesting.

IMG_6675

IMG_6677

IMG_6678

IMG_6679

bbqed mushrooms…awesome~!

IMG_6680

the last stop for the night was a cocktail bar called Death and Company, which lichan insisted on going to – reminded me of melbourne, and the cocktails were pretty good:D

more later!
