TOTALLY SEOUL’D: TKD GRADING, FOODIE NOMZ, FAREWELLS:(, HELLO SINGAPORE..

the last few weeks of my stay were pretty packed – 2 friends from australia visited, end of semester exams, and my taekwondo grading…

in my opinion, if you’re interested in visiting korea – you will need at LEAST one week. shopping, eating, sightseeing, going out etc…there is honestly SO much you can do [and EAT! omg the food…i miss it haha] in seoul alone…one of my friends only stayed 3 days – i crammed as much eating and activities as i could for him in those few days, but he still missed out on a lot >_<…haha…my two cents!

final exams were, once again not very challenging – in Yonsei KLI if you have not had much prior korean language exposure and come from a european/western/english-speaking background, the B course will be adequate as it goes pretty slowly, especially after the mid semester break. For me though, having been exposed to basic korean for years now; it was FAR to slow…i barely studied and still managed to get pretty good marks in the finals. the A course is a LOT faster; but i think i would rather pay for more of a challenge. next time! see how it goes…

definitely would recommend Yonsei if grammar is the main focus. Sogang University focuses more on speaking ability so i hear, so that may also be an option for me to consider next time i go back..

the range of bars, cafes and restaurants with their own themes and unique qualities is ENDLESS in korea. even in the few months there, i think i managed to barely scratch the surface in terms of visiting different places – example: went out one night with some friends to this lil bar in shinchon called ‘Bar Rough’…would not have thought much of this place; until we found out how good the cocktails were, and were further surprised/entertained by an impromptu cocktail show by the bartenders – who were both very talented [juggling bottles/cocktails, fiery cocktails, gangnam style dancing…what more could you want?]! we even scored a free cocktail out of it from the show:D

taekwondo training in korea was definitely an interesting experience – i trained at a dojang for foreigners/expats etc near my house called Hanwoori Taekwondo/한우리태권도 [click HERE to be taken to their facebook page!] – not only convenient for me as it was down the road! but it was good for korean exposure/making friends as the sessions would be conducted in both english and korean by Master Kim. i miss it a lot!~=[

the black belts who joined the club [including me] were made to wear white belts initially [i.e …the lowest belt you can get in taekwondo] and were not allowed to receive a black belt until we had re-graded in a grading exam to prove we could remember our taekwondo forms [known as ‘taeguk’]. pretty funny, most of the ‘white belts’ at Hanwoori were actually black belts=P

[the black belt re-grading for me consisted of remembering eight coloured belt taeguk patterns and the first dan black belt pattern; breaking 3 wooden boards, a 2 minute round of sparring, kicking combinations and ‘proving physical fitness’  – which meant situps and pushups >_< totally screwed up my pattern memorisation thanks to nerves…]

so for about 2 months of my stay i trained there 3-5 times a week, 1-2 hours a day [which was actually closer to 3 hrs by the end of it..] – i liked how training focused on a different aspect every day – Mondays stretching, Tuesdays physical training, Wednesdays sparring drills, Thursdays kicking drills, Fridays sparring – so it allowed you to get ‘prepared’ for sparring by the end of the week:)

consequently…thanks to that and daily incidental exercise…iv been the fittest iv been in YEARS! …and like the unco i am, sprained my ankle as soon as i got home to australia. i blame the cold weather here -___-

but yes, if you’re interested in taekwondo and are in korea – go check out Hanwoori! i highly recommend:D:D

farewells happened left right and centre in the final week…was super hard for me! T__T i think i get a bit attached to friends so it was hard for me to think that some of these people i may never see again..or at least for a long time! the downside of being a foreigner i guess.

until next time, seoul! enjoy the photos!
